Meta Cuts 8,000 Jobs as AI Spending Doubles

Meta has informed staff that it will eliminate approximately 8,000 positions—roughly 10% of its 79,000-strong workforce—beginning May 20, alongside leaving 6,000 open roles unfilled. The cuts come as the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp commits to between $115 billion and $135 billion in capital expenditure this year, nearly double its 2025 spending, as it races to compete in the artificial intelligence arms race.
Chief People Officer Janelle Gale wrote in a memo that the reductions are part of a “continued effort to run the company more efficiently” and to “offset the other investments we are making.” The layoffs follow earlier cuts in Meta’s Reality Labs division and mark the latest in a relentless series of workforce reductions stretching back four years. Meta reports its quarterly earnings on April 29.
Intel Crushes Earnings Targets, Shares Surge 22%

Google Unveils Eighth-Generation TPU Chips in Nvidia Challenge
