Iran-Israel Ceasefire Takes Effect After Twelve-Day Conflict
MIDDLE EAST
A ceasefire between Iran and Israel took effect on 24 June 2025, ending the Twelve-Day War that began when Israel conducted a major military operation against Iranian nuclear facilities, military sites, and regime infrastructure on 13 June. The ceasefire was mediated by the United States and Qatar, with President Donald Trump announcing the agreement on social media on 23 June.
Both Israel and the US claimed that Iran’s missile and nuclear programmes had been severely damaged by the military strikes, claims that Tehran has denied. The conflict marked the first open direct confrontation between the two Middle East powers, following nearly two years of war between Israel and Iran-backed militant groups that included two previous direct confrontations in 2024.
Xi Jinping Makes Rare Visit to North Korea
ASIA
Chinese President Xi Jinping is visiting North Korea from 8-9 June 2026 at the invitation of leader Kim Jong Un, marking his first visit to the isolated regime in nearly seven years. The last time Xi visited Pyongyang was in 2019. The visit comes as China seeks to position itself as one of the few world powers still able to engage all sides in an increasingly fractured global geopolitical landscape.
The summit represents a significant boost to bilateral ties between Beijing and Pyongyang, with North Korea remaining one of China’s longest-standing allies in the region. Analysts view the visit as part of China’s broader strategy to maintain influence on the Korean Peninsula and demonstrate diplomatic capability amidst rising global tensions.
Zelensky Proposes Direct Talks with Putin to End War
EUROPE
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a renewed bid to end the war, according to an open letter published on 4 June. In the letter, Zelensky stated that only “direct engagement” between the two countries could bring an end to the conflict that has now lasted more than five years since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.
The proposal came a day after Ukraine launched a large-scale attack on St. Petersburg, striking a major oil terminal. Zelensky noted that Putin has now spent about half of his 26 years in power fighting Ukraine, counting from the Russian military intervention in eastern Ukraine that began in 2014. The Kremlin has not yet formally responded to the peace proposal.
Brazil Criticises US Tariff Proposal Over Forced Labour Concerns
LATIN AMERICA
Brazil’s foreign ministry released a statement on 3 June criticising the proposal by the US Office of the Trade Representative (USTR) to impose tariffs on countries including Brazil over forced labour concerns. The move represents another point of tension between the United States and Latin American nations as the region continues to navigate economic challenges following US tariff policies implemented earlier this year.
The USTR’s proposal is part of broader US trade enforcement measures that could affect multiple countries across Latin America. Brazil’s response highlights the diplomatic and economic complexities facing the region as it balances trade relationships with the United States while addressing labour and human rights standards demanded by Washington.
EU Advances Climate Policy with Member State Plan Submission Deadline
EUROPEAN UNION
The European Union is advancing its climate policy framework with Member States mandated to submit updated National Climate Plans to the European Commission by June 2025. These plans, developed through public consultations, are a critical component of the EU’s broader climate strategy and its commitment to the European Climate Law, which sets a goal of climate neutrality by 2050.
The Commission is also working on the European preparedness union strategy, which covers a wide array of risks including climate impacts, with a planned European climate adaptation set to be presented in 2026. A Eurobarometer survey shows that 81% of Europeans continue to back the EU-wide goal of climate neutrality by 2050, while a growing share of citizens report feeling the effects of climate change.
